About the event

The most pictorial of the Thai festivals is held on the full-moon of the 12th lunar month. Little candle-lit krathongs are launched onto the water as an offering to Mother Water. People apologise for befouling the water and vow to do better in the future.

The ceremony is believed to have arisen in the era of King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, the first metropolis of Thailand, and to have been started by Nang Nophamas or Tao Sri Chulalak, the Brahman companion of the King. She was the first person who introduced "Krathongcherm", the banana leaf Krathong in the form of a lotus blossom on the festival night. The festival starts in the evening when there is a full luna in the sky.

People carry their Kratongs to the river and waterways.

After sparking candles and joss sticks and making a wish, they tenderly place the Kratongs on the liquid and let them float away till they go out of perception. It is thought that Kratongs transfer away their transgressions and bad luck, and happiness will come to them. Indeed, it is the time to be joyful and happy as the miseries are drifted away.

The festival involves a competition of Krathong-making, the Nophamas Queen Contest, local games and exhibits, recreation programs and firework presentations. The Loy Krathong song gives to the romantic environment of this opportunity.
